Are blockbusters the existence of studios and other green funds? Given its $80 million budget, The Creator might not fall into that category, but that’s not the point.
While the special effects of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are becoming more and more obvious and the natural environment seems to be a rare commodity, Gareth Edwards’ sci-fi film brings a breath of fresh air.
Like Dune before it, or even Batman (which was forced to abandon studio filming due to Covid before filming could take place more openly) and Christopher Nolan’s films, the creator aims for realism. As much as possible in a feature film set in a post-apocalyptic future pitting humans against machines.
And this especially involves inserting digital tricks into the natural environment, as the director and screenwriter told us during a visit to Paris: “Usually on a big Hollywood sci-fi movie, you’re lucky if you get out of the studio a few times.”he tells us.
“When we did Rogue One, we went to Jordan, the Maldives and a few other places. with great success. That’s why I said I wanted to make the whole film. And here in Thailand alone, we went to 80 places. We were in a new place every day, we didn’t go back.”
We just had to go out into the world and everything was there. It’s so rich and beautiful, with so much detail that just needs to be captured.
“And it makes the creator feel like a rich journey in terms of imagery and locations. I really wanted to have that feeling. We get a lot of compliments on the world we’ve built scientifically. Fantasy, but it’s a little bit. Fraud: We just had to go into the world and everything was there. . It’s very rich and beautiful, with a lot of detail that’s just there to capture.”

A contrast that fits his talk around artificial intelligence, where the main threat isn’t so much the technology as what humans can do with it. At a time when artificial intelligence continues to excite Hollywood despite the end of the screenwriters’ strike, The Creator fits in with the zeitgeist. Looking to the future and being as realistic as possible.
