“I was always told that it was normal for a woman to suffer.” A patient trusts director Claire Simon’s camera in her new documentary called Our Bodies.
In theaters this Wednesday, October 4, this moving film takes us inside a Paris hospital department specializing in gynecological pathologies and obstetrics.
“I had the opportunity to capture an epic tale of women’s bodies in the hospital, their diversity, their singularity, their beauty throughout the stages of life. A journey of desires, fears, struggles and unique stories that each person experiences alone.
Through these individual stories, Claire Simon paints a powerful collective portrait that follows the different stages of women’s lives.
A must film
From adolescence to end of life, a common theme of the documentary, each consultation highlights the personal experience of a hospital patient. His experience, his feelings, his suffering very often, his fears, his questions and the answers and explanations of the professionals who listen to him.
Wanting to present and film the body as a whole, the director depicts various examinations and also lifts the curtain on certain medical procedures that usually take place behind closed doors (some sequences can also be difficult to watch).
Termination of pregnancy, gender transition, difficulty having a baby, endometriosis, egg retrieval, pregnancy, medically assisted reproduction, childbirth, announcement of diagnosis, cancer, rare disease, etc.
In some cases, these stages and tests overlap and overlap. And all of them disrupt everyday life and reflect the complexity and richness of the human body.
With Claire Simon and her all-female team alongside and always with kindness, the audience is invited into the intimacy of these individuals, women and couples. The director most often stands aside in favor of what he shows and what he tells, until the subject becomes very personal to him.
If he wants to emphasize that everyone has only one story, his own, he still manages to convey an important and essential message through our bodies: no one is truly alone in this great adventure that is life. “Seeing others helps a lot” As he recalls.
