Batman: Before playing Joker, Barry Keoghan auditioned for Riddler

In the audition video, Barry Keoghan produced a video inspired by A Clockwork Orange (1971)

With a small participation as Joker in Batman (2022), starring Robert Pattinson and directed by Matt Reeves, Barry Keoghan originally auditioned for another role: Charadeplayed brilliantly by Paul Dano.

This information had been released in October 2022, with GQ releasing video of the audition Keoghan quite inspired by A Clockwork Orange (1971), a cinema classic directed and adapted by Stanley Kubrick.

Now, during an interview with Esquirethe actor gave more details about the audition process for the film released on March 3, 2022. According to the actor, he spent US$10 to record the audition, in which he wears formal clothes with suspenders and a hat, while walks bloodied down a corridor.

“I just invented it. I wanted to do it in the style Kubrick: symmetrical, the X on the back, the square door frame, everything square,” he recalled Keoghan. “I just wanted the style to pop. Stylish and catchy. “It was just me giving my idea. And then I thought, ‘I’ll send this!'”

The artist received a response just four months later when his agent received a call from his producer Dylan Clark: “[A equipe de] Batman wants you to interpret the Joker – but you can’t tell anyone.”

Right away, Barry Keoghan described the Joker of him as “a little charming and a little hurt, a broken boy,” and continued: “I wanted some kind of human behind the makeup. I want people to identify with him… [saibam] that this is a facade he uses.”

The continuation of Batman has already been confirmed, but there are no details on who is part of the cast other than Robert Pattinson. Until now, Keoghan was not called to reprise the role of the villain. “As soon as the call comes in, I’m their man, I’m there,” he said.
