Car bomb kills Russian party member in Ukraine, governor says

A pro-Russian party official was killed Saturday by a car bomb in the Moscow-controlled town of New Kakhovka in Ukraine’s Kherson province, the local governor said.

Vladimir Malov, executive secretary of the city branch of the local government’s United Russia party, died in hospital, Vladimir Saldo said on his Telegram channel.

Saldo said Malov was the target of a “terrorist attack,” implying that it was an attack orchestrated by Ukraine. There was no immediate comment from Kiev.

Officials believed to be supporters of the Russian government in parts of Ukraine that Moscow claims to have annexed since the invasion began in February last year have frequently been the targets of assassination attempts, many of them fatal.

In July, Russia said it had foiled a Ukrainian attempt to kill Sergei Aksyonov, the Russian-backed leader of annexed Crimea, by arresting an officer before he could blow up Aksyonov’s car.
