Ryan Reynolds recalled an accident during the filming of Protecting the Enemy, a film in which he played opposite Denzel Washington
Ryan Reynolds thought his acting career would end after accidentally hitting denzel washington during filming of protecting the enemy (2012). Directed by Daniel Espinosathe film follows a CIA agent investigating a veteran accused of betraying the agency.
In one of the scenes, Reynolds hit the eyes of Washington with great force and the actor immediately regretted it, as he recalled in an interview with David Letterman in the program of Netflix,My Next Guest Needs No Introduction. “There’s a scene in the movie… where he crawls through the trunk in the back of the car and grabs me and strangles me,” he said. Reynolds.
“We were actually driving a car at high speed. We were in this car out of control, and the corner of my head hit his eye so hard I was sure he opened it,” he recalled. “At this point, I thought I was going to be sent home via crematorium — like, it’s over now, that’s it, not just my career, but my pulse is going to stop.”
Happily, Washington didn’t care what happened: “He was fine. He was like, ‘Hey, accidents happen. Let’s do it again. Let’s shoot on the other side so we can keep shooting and not see this.’ We did it again. I have the other eye, Dave. For a minute he looked like a Christmas ornament.”
