Quentin Tarantino is a big fan of the 1970s movies he grew up with and formed his cinephile, and it’s no surprise that he wanted to remake one of the films from that era: Failure in an Organization.
The Unsuccessful Organization or “The Outfit” in English is a feature film directed by John Flynn – whose other rather violent film Quentin Tarantino loves – was released in 1973 in the United States and in 1975 in France.
In a failed attempt to organize, Earl McLean (Robert Duvall) has just served time in prison and upon his release discovers that his brother Ed has been killed during a bank robbery that was used to launder money for the Mafia. Earl quickly realizes he’s next on the list, seeks out his former partner Cody (Joe Don Baker) and attacks an organization led by a certain Mailer (Robert Ryan).

and in his work Cinema speculationsDirector Quentin Tarantino reveals he was considering directing a remake of the outfit, with Robert De Niro as McLean, Harvey Keitel (Reservoir Dogs) as Cody and Pam Grier (Jackie Brown) as McLean’s traumatized wife.
As Tarantino succinctly puts it on the pages of his book:
Only now that I have written it, I regret not being able to do it.
He had the idea in the “late ’90s,” meaning that this remake would be shot between Jackie Brown (1997) and Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003). A mobster and revenge movie with leading actors, heavy dialogue and a shift to the usual violence of Tarantino’s cinema: maybe there was a future classic of the caliber of Pulp Fiction or Goodfellas, but we will never know what his spontaneous film performance was like. At the same time, he would give.
