In an interview with People magazine (via The Hollywood Reporter ) published online Friday, Henry Selick reflected on the iconic Tim Burton animated film he directed, The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year.
When asked about a potential sequel, he admitted that it doesn’t hold much interest for him, saying that the original is “The perfect movie came out at the perfect time, but over the years it became something much bigger.“
He added: “I think Tim in particular is wondering, why bother? He certainly doesn’t need to make more money with a sequel. It has had many other hits and so far no one has come up with a good idea for a sequel. And I still think Tim will decide. I don’t think there is any point that would convince him.“
But “idea” is not completely excluded, and “idea” Henry Selick (Coraline) has one… but not for a sequel. In fact, the filmmaker explained that he would be more inclined to make a prequel.
There might be a more interesting story about how Jack became the king of Halloween town.
Whether it’s a sequel or a prequel, Chris Sarandon is more than ready to “absolutely” reprise his role as Jack Skellington in the new project: “To quote Henry: “Hell yeah.” If there was a sequel, I would be there immediately.“
1993 stop-motion animated film based on the story Tim Burton, follows the adventures of Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King, and Halloween Town when he accidentally discovers Christmas Town and decides to take over the holiday. But his efforts to bring Christmas back to Halloween Town are getting pretty confusing…
The Nightmare Before Christmas is currently streaming on Disney+.
