You Brazilians welcomed into a Catholic school north of the Gaza Strip, they now live in a government-rented house in Rafah, a city in the far south. There the group awaits permission from the Brazilian embassy in Palestine to cross the border into Egypt.

The arrival of the group took place on Saturday 14th, after the Israeli government issued a warning on Thursday night, informing that the population of the Gaza Strip had until the end of the day on Friday (13th) to leave the region and head south . . The deadline was subsequently extended and ended on Saturday morning.

Some Brazilians have reported moments of desperation until the transfer. In an interview with Jornal O Globo, Ambassador Alessandro Candeas, head of the Brazilian representative office in Ramallah, a Palestinian city divided between the Gaza Strip and Egypt, reported that the group is in a safe place.

“A more open, safe and comfortable place for them, despite the simplicity. The house is already in Rafah, a few steps from the border. There they will calmly wait for the moment for the border to open,” Candeas said. “What a difference compared to the tension and bombs that were there until this morning.”

In total, 28 Brazilians requested evacuation, including 14 children, eight women and six adult men. Now, the next step for the group is to cross the border. Once on Egyptian soil, they will be able to take a Brazilian Air Force (FAB) plane to Brazil.
