Exorcist Allegiance: Discover the Actor Who Voices the Demon. He has quite a record!

The Exorcist – Devotion is currently in theaters. A direct sequel to William Friedkin’s 1974 feature film, David Gordon Green’s film is set in present day United States. Victor (Leslie Odom Jr.) is raising his daughter Angela (Lydia Jewett) alone. This is not the same demon as in Friedkin’s film

If the demon that possessed young Regan (Linda Blair) in William Friedkin’s film is the demon Pazuzu, a deity from Mesopotamia who is supposed to protect pregnant women, the demon in devotion is not the same. This is his antagonist.

The demon that possesses young girls in David Gordon Green’s film is Lamatsu, another Mesopotamian figure. Ancient peoples say that it is a bloodthirsty demon that primarily attacks pregnant women and newborns.

The film’s press kit includes information from the Metropolitan Museum of Art and explains that the people turned to Pazuzu to confront the evil forces of Lamatsu.

“A powerful demon, Pazuzu was often used as a shield against another terrifying supernatural being: Lamashtu, a demon of terrible destructive power, especially feared by pregnant women and very young mothers, who were his favorite prey.“.

These two entities are often mentioned together in Mesopotamian mythology because of their relationship. Their images are represented in various objects and amulets of antiquity, which confirms the belief in their protective power.

Why does Lamatsu know Regan?

Demon’s voice is in the record books

William Friedkin’s film also features a woman who doubles as the demon Pazuzu. It was actress Mercedes McCambridge, known in the 1970s for her “neutral, not masculine or feminine” voice. This was not recorded in the credits of Friedkin’s film. In French, the 1974 Demon is voiced by Micheline Bona. For the 2001 remastered release, Peret Pradier lends his voice to Pazuzu.
