In the midst of the violence that characterized the elections in Ecuador, Ecuadorian voters returned to the polls this Sunday (15th) to choose, in the second round, the new president of the country. Luisa Gonzalez AND Daniele Noboa.
The first round took place on August 21, and candidate Luisa González appeared in the lead, with approximately 33% of the votes. Then came Daniel Noboa, with about 23%.
The candidate
Luisa Magdalena González was born on November 22, 1977 in Quito. She is a lawyer specializing in international economics and development. She graduated from the International University of Ecuador and holds a master’s degree in Senior Management from the Institute of National Higher Studies and in Economics and International Development from the University of Madrid.
She was minister of Labor and Tourism, national secretary of the Andean Parliament, national secretary of Public Administration and deputy minister of Tourism Management at the Ministry of Tourism.
The candidate
Daniel Noboa formed his own party and one of his election promises is to attract foreign investment and create jobs, focusing especially on young people. He is the son of a multimillionaire Álvaro Noboa, a banana magnate who once ran for president of Ecuador, but didn’t win. Former MP and businessman, Daniel is 36 years old.
Violence in Ecuador
This year’s election campaign in Ecuador was marked by the assassination of the candidate Fernando Villavicencio, investigative journalist, killed with a gunshot to the head while leaving a demonstration in Quito in early July.
A criminal group linked to drug trafficking has claimed responsibility, but the country’s prosecutor’s office continues to investigate the case. Cristiano Zurita, who replaced Villavicencio’s candidacy, went to vote in complete safety, wearing a helmet and protective jacket.
Another murdered politician was Pedro Briones. The crime occurred five days after Villavicencio’s death.
