Countries await authorization to evacuate citizens in the Gaza Strip
This Monday (16), the Egyptian government accused Israel of not having opened the Rafah border post, in the Gaza Strip, which will allow the evacuation of civilians, including 28 Brazilians, to the African country.
According to Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, the Israeli government “has yet to take the necessary steps” to allow Palestinians and citizens of other nationalities to cross the border.
The Rafah post recorded the movement of United Nations (UN) vehicles during the morning, but remains closed.
The press even reported the opening of the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt, but Israel immediately denied the information. “To date there is no ceasefire or entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza in exchange for the departure of foreign citizens,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said.
The Brazilian government is waiting for the opening of the Rafah post to save 28 citizens and is not the only one experiencing this scenario.
“Today we hope to remove the 10-12 Italians who live there from the Gaza Strip,” said Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.
Rome is also working for the release of the Italian-Israelis who could be among the approximately 200 hostages held by Hamas in Gaza, including a couple and a young man who participated in the rave attacked by the fundamentalist group on 7 October.
“Of course, through our diplomacy, we work for the release of all hostages,” Tajani underlined.
To date, the conflict has caused approximately 4,150 deaths, 2,750 on the Palestinian side and 1,400 on the Israeli side. More than 13 thousand people were injured. Among the victims are 14 employees of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) killed in Israeli bombing in Gaza.
‘Big mistake’ – Late last week, Israel ordered the evacuation of civilians from the city of Gaza, which has more than 1 million inhabitants, signaling the imminent start of a possible ground incursion into Palestinian territory.
When asked about this hypothesis, US President Joe Biden said that a possible Israeli occupation of Gaza would be a “big mistake”. In an interview with the “60 Minutes” program, the president also stressed that Hamas “does not represent all Palestinians.”
Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken returned to Israel just four days after his latest visit for talks on the crisis. .
