The threshold reached 13.49 meters, the lowest in 121 years of monitoring. Heavy rains are only expected towards the end of the month
One day after reaching the lowest level in history, the Rio Negro, one of the main rivers of the Amazon, continues to decline. On the morning of this Tuesday 17th, the river reached the threshold of 13.49 metres, ten centimeters less than on Monday morning, in Manaus, capital of the Amazon. It is the lowest level in 121 years, since monitoring began.
The scattered rains that have fallen in the Manaus region have already helped improve air quality in the capital, but have not stopped the decline in catchment levels. This year’s drought is the worst in the state’s history.
Monitoring is carried out daily by the Manaus port administration. The weekend measurement showed a drop of 13 cm on Saturday, minus 9 cm on Sunday and minus 10 cm on Monday. The fall occurred again on Tuesday morning. On the 10th, the Rio Negro reached a level of 14.29 m, indicating a height difference of 80 centimeters in one week. The forecast is that heavy rains will only fall at the end of October.
Although little, the rains of the last few days have improved the fire scenario in the state. According to the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe), from October 2 to October 8, the state recorded 1,978 fires. From the 9th to the 15th, the total number of outbreaks in the state dropped to 856, a reduction of nearly 60%. This Monday, only 11 fires were recorded in the state.
Even the air in Manaus, which last week was considered one of the worst places in the world to breathe due to wildfire smoke, is more breathable. According to the international air quality monitor World’s Air Pollution, air quality has gone from being classified as “hazardous” to “moderate” and “good”, depending on the capital region. Over the last three days, an average of 30.8 millimeters of rain has rained in the capital of the Amazon.
