In 2002, director Carl Franklin filmed the novel Crimes and Power (Translated into French under the title Two-faced betrayal) by Joseph Finder, one of the masters of literary suspense.
The story follows Claire Kubik, a fearless prosecutor who lives the dream life with her husband Tom, an independent contractor whose business is doing quite well. As they set out to start a family, they find themselves the victims of a robbery gone wrong.
When Tom is arrested by FBI agents after the incident, Claire learns that he is a former secret military agent and a murderer on the run for fifteen years. Determined to protect him in order to free him, Claire enlists the help of a great lawyer with a better knowledge of military justice.
Married in the City, screenwriters Yuri Seltzer and Grace Carey Bickle tweak the plot slightly to emphasize its dramatic intensity and show their own sensitivity to the characters. In this way, they sign off on a classic experimental film, but well-executed, full of twists and turns to the end result.
In addition to its production, the film’s effectiveness rests primarily on its excellent acting – especially the beautiful relationship that develops between Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman. A duet that isn’t his first effort since the two actors were on the 1997 Collectionneur bill.
