Leonard Cure, 53, was released about three years ago after being wrongly convicted of armed robbery
A black man who served more than 16 years in prison for an unjust armed robbery conviction was shot and killed by a police officer during a traffic stop in Georgia, USA. Leonard Cure, 53, was allegedly approached while driving after visiting his mother, authorities said. The information comes from New York Post.
According to a press release from Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), Cure was released from prison three and a half years ago. This Monday, the 16th, he was allegedly stopped for speeding on Interstate 95, in Camden County.
When he approached, Cure got out of the car at the officer’s request and initially cooperated. According to the GBI, he became uncooperative and became violent after being informed that he would be detained.
“After complying with the officer’s request, the officer deployed Cure with the Taser,” the agency said. “The cure attacked him,” she says.
As the GBI reported, the officer used a Taser and baton a second time to restrain Cure, who allegedly followed him without complying. “The officer pulled his gun and shot Cure,” the agency said.
He was taken to hospital, but did not survive.
Cure was represented in his lawsuit by the Florida Innocence Project, which released a statement Monday mourning his loss. “We are devastated by the news that our client, Leonard Cure, was tragically shot and killed this morning,” he said.
The project added that he had a job, was in the process of buying a house and dreamed of attending college to study music production.
