Following approval from the FIA World Motor Sport Council, Shanghai will host a Formula E round for the first time in May 2024
Formula E announced this Thursday (19th) the inclusion of China and India in the calendar of the tenth season of the Electric Car World Championship. As a result, the category will be the only one to host events during 2024 in the three largest countries in the world by population: China, India and the USA*.
Shanghai and Hyderabad have been confirmed as host cities for the tenth season of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, following approval from the FIA World Motorsport Council meeting.
Formula E will race for the first time in Shanghai, on the Shanghai International Circuit, with two races on the weekend of May 25th and 26th. The race will mark the return of the category to the country where the first eprix in its history took place, in Beijing, on 13 September 2014, with Sanya and Hong Kong having hosted a total of seven races in China to date, the most recent in March 2019.
Hyderabad will host Formula E for the second time in history on February 10, 2024, with the support of the Telangana government and minister KT Rama Rao. The city debuted in the world of electric cars this year, with maximum capacity (31,000 people) in February this year. The event provided a boost of nearly $84 million to Hyderabad’s economy**.
“Without a doubt, our tenth season calendar is the most attractive yet for drivers, teams, fans and spectators around the world. We will be bringing Formula E to Shanghai for the first time and are honored to return to India thanks to the support of the Telangana government and Minister KT Rama Rao. The combination of street circuits, which is in the DNA of Formula E, and racing tracks, will allow drivers to further test the capabilities of the GEN3 after a first season that exceeded all expectations with triple-digit overtaking in the majority of stages.” said Alberto Longo, co-founder and director of the Formula E championship.
Formula E has already made history with the Season 10 calendar when it was confirmed that Tokyo will host a race on March 30. It will be the first time a World Motorsport Championship race will take place on the streets in the heart of the iconic Japanese capital.
The Sao Paulo E-Prix, which marked Formula E’s debut in Brazil in its ninth season, is confirmed for next year on March 16, with the GEN3 racing through the Anhembi Sambodromo in the capital of Sao Paulo .
“Formula E will lead global motorsport next season by being the only world championship racing in the three largest markets: China, India and the United States. Together with our debut on the streets of Tokyo and races in other major global markets such as Brazil, Germany, Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom, we have built a calendar that has the potential to engage billions of people in an exciting, fun and electric future. of motorsport,” explained Jeff Dodds, CEO of Formula E.
Two more updates will be made to the Season 10 calendar. The event scheduled to take place in Jakarta on June 8 will not be held due to the Indonesian presidential election, which will take place throughout much of June. This would impact the logistics of holding a race on the streets of the capital during this period. Formula E and Jakarta authorities are evaluating the feasibility of racing in the city on an alternative date.
The second update concerns a likely change of venue to Italy for rounds 7 and 8. This follows analysis from Formula E and FIA experts at the Season 9 races in Rome, where the new GEN3 car reached the limits of the narrow circuit and with sharp curves in the commercial district of Rome. The category is exploring alternative locations, including permanent circuits, to keep the event in the Italian market.

The tenth season of Formula E will begin on January 13 in Mexico City, with the E-Prix taking place at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodriguez. In total there will be 16 stages, which will conclude the championship with a double round in London, inside the ExCel London. Pre-season testing will take place next week in Valencia at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit.
