19 Undue Fees Your Bank Shouldn’t Charge

Finance explains how thousands of customers can free themselves from commissions unduly charged by banks

Businesses that have a bank account know that fees are charged every month for maintenance and services provided. However, there are fees that are considered abusive and should not be charged.

With the advice of Bumme Consultoria Financeira, consult a list of 19 abusive commissions still charged by some banks.

1. Early Settlement Fee (TLA)

When you stipulate a financing or loan contract there is the possibility of advance payment. This is guaranteed by the Consumer Protection Code. But banks charge a fee for doing so.

This fee, however, should not be charged to the customer. Debt settlement can be carried out at any time and without any commission being charged and the banking institution will also have to offer a discount in relation to the amount.

2. Card and invoice issuing fee (TEC)

It is prohibited to make charges for issuing vouchers and invoices. According to the Central Bank, the burden or cost of issuing invoices and payment slips can be charged to the company that owns the service and cannot be transferred to the end customer.

3. Credit opening fee (TAC)

The credit opening fee should not be charged if the customer already has some kind of relationship with the bank. However, if you are not a customer, the Central Bank authorizes the debit.

Stay tuned! In some financing cases, banks try to “push” the fee under another name, which should not be done.

4. Registration Renewal Fee (TRC)

This type of fee can only be charged to the customer when the financial institution seeks credit protection services. And this can only happen in two situations: when you open a savings or current account and in the case of taking out credit and leasing. However, it should not be charged cumulatively.

5. Maintenance fee on inactive accounts

If the current account is inactive for six months, the bank will have to close it and notify the customer. After this period of inactivity, the bank cannot charge any type of maintenance fee.

6. Package of services worth more than the current account balance

According to the Central Bank, fees charged to current accounts or savings deposits cannot exceed the amount available in the account (an amount that includes the credit limit, on which interest is charged).

7. Salary account maintenance fee

The salary account is the account that the worker opens in the bank to receive the monthly installment paid by the company where he works. The Central Bank prohibits charging fees for using the account. The account holder is entitled to a magnetic card, two monthly statements and up to five free withdrawals per month. The card cannot be charged if this is the first card issue.

8. Cost of issuing a debit card

The card cannot be charged if this is the first card issue. But if it is a duplicate, due to theft, robbery, loss or damage, the bank may charge you.

They also cannot be charged

See other fees that, according to the Central Bank, should not be charged:

  • 9. Provision of cards with debit function;
  • 10. Provision of a second copy of the card, except in cases of replacement requests made by the account holder resulting from loss, theft or theft;
  • 11. Damages and other reasons not attributable to the issuing body;
  • 12. Make up to four withdrawals, per month, at the cash desk, including by check or single check, or at self-service terminals;
  • 13. Make up to two fund transfers between accounts at the institution itself, per month, at the cash desk, at the self-service terminal and/or via the internet;
  • 14. Issuance of a maximum of two account statements, per month, containing the transactions of the last thirty days, via the cash desk and/or self-service terminal;
  • 15. Conducting consultations via the Internet;
  • 16. Provision of the extract referred to in art.19;
  • 17. Check the clearing;

  • 19. Provision of any service by electronic means, in the case of accounts whose contracts provide for the exclusive use of such means.
