Pan 2023 Recap: Brazil wins gold in skateboarding, swimming


Race Sunday also guaranteed two Brazilian bronzes in mountain biking

Sunday brought many emotions to Brazil Pan American Games of Santiago 2023. José Gabriel won the first Brazilian medal in this edition, while Rayssa Andrade and Lucas Rabelo won gold in skate street. In swimming, Guilherme Costa also reached the top step of the podium in the 400 medley and the 4×100 freestyle relay. The country currently occupies second place in the medal table.

Mountain biking

Mountain biking guaranteed two bronzes for Brazil. José Gabriel de Almeida finished third (1h20min13s), behind Canadian Gunnar Holmgren and Chilean Martin Kossmann. In the women’s race the podium positions were repeated. Raiza Goulão took bronze, with 1h24min57s, while fellow Brazilian Karen Fernandes finished in fifth place.

Skate street

Olympic medalist at Tokyo 2020 and current street skateboard world champion, Raysa Leal confirmed her favoritism and won Brazilian gold at Pan 2023. The youngest member of Team Brazil scored 236.98 points in the sum of her round with the three best maneuvers. In turn, Pâmela Rosa won the silver medal (211.34) and Paige Heyn, American, the bronze (176.35).

In the men’s category, Lucas Rabelo won with 264.45 points. The silver went to the Peruvian Angelo Caro Narvaez and the bronze to the Colombian Luis Jhancarlos Ortiz. Gabryel Aguilar was injured during the fourth maneuver and finished eighth.

I swim

Guilherme “Cachorrão” Costa won the 400 freestyle, won Brazil’s first swimming gold in the Chilean capital and broke the Pan-American record, with 3 minutes 46 seconds 79. Fellow Brazilian Stephan Steverink finished fifth in the race. Furthermore, Léo de Deus finished with silver in the 200 meter butterfly.

The final of the women’s 400 freestyle ended with a Brazilian double. Maria Fernanda Costa (4’06.68) and Gabrielle Roncatto (4’06.88) won silver and bronze respectively. The victory went to the American Paige Madden, who set a new Pan-American record (4’06’45).

In the women’s 4x100m relay, Canada finished first, the Americans finished second, and Brazil finished on the podium. Ana Vieira, Stephanie Balduccini, Giovanna Diamante and Celine Bispo clocked 3min39s94.

To end on a high note, the team composed of Felipe Ribeiro, Guilherme Caribé, Marcelo Chierighini and Víctor Alcará won Brazil’s seventh men’s 4×100 meters gold medal in the history of the Pan American Games. They finished the race with an excellent time of 3:13:51, ahead of the Americans and Canadians.

The other Brazilian athletes who entered the pool this Saturday were unable to reach the podium.
