Will the Ghostbusters saga return to cinemas for a new episode? After two cult hits in 1984 and 1989, the franchise was largely forgotten until 2016. The female reboot was directed by Paul Feig, which was very poorly received by critics and the public. The feature film was a dismal failure, grossing only $229 million worldwide against an estimated budget of $144 million.
Five years after that flop, Ghostbusters: Legacy returned to the source. Jason Reitman, son of Ivan Reitman (director of the first two opus), took up the torch. This time the film was a direct continuation of the second part; It introduced us to new characters associated with our beloved Ghostbusters, previously played by Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson and Bill Murray.
The reboot’s smaller-budget (around $75 million) feature grossed $204 million internationally. Without a big hit, did the work bring in enough greenbacks to convince Sony Pictures to continue? It seems so because the release date has already been announced!
When is the sequel to Ghostbusters: Legacy coming out?
After Jason Reitman, the screenwriter of The Legacy, Gil Kenan, takes the director’s chair. After being delayed due to the writers’ strike, this new episode of Ghostbusters will be released on April 3, 2024 in France! This will be the 4th ectoplasmic adventure in the main saga (and the 5th opus in the franchise, counting the 2016 reboot).
What’s more, photos from the filming of the sequel were released last April and show the return of 2 important characters!
McKenna Grace, the protagonist of The Legacy, will reprise her role as Phoebe. This very promising young actress is now 17 years old. Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon and Finn Wolfhard will also return. Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, and Dan Aykroyd will also return as the famous ghost hunters Peter Venkman, Winston Zedemore, and Ray Stantz.
However, if the screenwriters’ strike is over, the actors’ strike is still going on. If this continues, this new episode of Ghostbusters will surely be delayed again, with filming only possible once an agreement has been reached between the actors’ union and the studios.
