Looking for alternative solutions for battery electric cars, Toyota tests the Corolla Cross H2 Concept

Toyota remains obsessed with what it calls the “hydrogen society.” Although the Toyota Mirai is not a bestseller, due to the high costs of the hydrogen-powered car, the H2 vehicle continues to be part of the Japanese automaker’s plans. And one of the cars that has been tested for more than a year is the hydrogen Toyota Corolla Cross.

In 2022, Toyota stepped up testing with hydrogen vehicles, taking part in endurance races in Japan with a GR Corolla H2 and a performance in Europe with a GR Yaris H2 at the World Rally Championship in Ypres, Belgium.

This technological advancement gave Toyota engineers the confidence to create a prototype road car: the Corolla Cross H2 Concept.

The hydrogen Corolla Cross uses the 1.6 turbo 3-cylinder engine from the Corolla GR with sports-derived high-pressure hydrogen direct injection engine technology.

Toyota added Mirai’s know-how on hydrogen tanks and was able to create a hydrogen prototype of the Corolla Cross H2. It can carry 5 passengers and their luggage.

According to Toyota, the “real-world” evaluation is carried out in parallel with ongoing digital development.

According to Toyota, the main merits of hydrogen combustion include the ability to leverage existing internal combustion engine technologies, rapid refueling times, and the clear reduction in the use and need for limited-supply elements such as lithium and nickel.

In Brazil, Toyota has partnered with USP to develop the ethanol hydrogen cell.

In its latest report, Toyota said it is about 40% on the way to commercializing products like the hydrogen-powered Corolla Cross. “It is not yet possible to say whether the technology will reach maturity for road cars, but there is undoubtedly a clear opportunity in motorsport,” the Japanese automaker said.
