Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache’s A Difficult Year stars Pio Marmai and Jonathan Cohen as two over-indebted forty-year-olds who meet young environmental activists led by Cactus, played by Noemi Merlanti.
More attracted by the free beer and chips than by their arguments, they gradually join the movement without conviction. During the sequence, Pio Marmai goes to Madeleine (Danielle Lebrun), an elderly woman who gives him some objects for association.
The latter then tells him an anecdote about the bridges on the euro notes, drawing a parallel to the journey people take throughout life. According to Madeleine, the real wealth of people is to go from a place they know to a place they don’t know. Metaphorically, men are bridges for her.
Is the anecdote about the euro banknote bridges true?
The story told by Daniel LeBrun is true.
Back in 1996 (the euro was officially launched on January 1, 2002), the European Bank envisioned the design of the euro banknotes and decided to include bridges symbolizing the connection between the different countries of Europe, then 12. Given that there is only a 7 euro note and in order for the countries To make no difference, the European Bank entrusts the Austrian graphic artist Robert Kalina with the representation of 7 bridges, which at different times showed the European architectural style.

Thus, the bridge on the 5-euro banknote has classical architecture, the 10-euro banknote is in the Roman style, the 20-euro bridge is in the Gothic style, the 50-euro bridge is in the Renaissance style, the one on the 100-euro note. A mix of baroque and rococo, the €200 bill represents “glass and steel” 19th-century architecture, while the €500 (no longer in circulation as of 2019) represents modern 20th-century architecture.
Therefore, there were no bridges on banknotes in 2002. But in 2011, the Dutch city of Spijkenisse decided to build them in one of its new districts. You can now cross the 7 bridges shown on the tickets.

And what about the windows and doors that appear on the front of those same notes?
It is a symbol of open-mindedness and cooperation between EU member states. Each has an architectural style corresponding to the bridge.
A Difficult Year is currently in theaters.
