Giorgia Meloni spoke in the Senate about the Israel-Hamas war
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Wednesday (25) that it is necessary to resume political action to promote the two-state solution in the Middle East.
The Prime Minister spoke in the Senate on the eve of her participation in the European Council in Brussels, which will have the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas among the main topics on the agenda.
“I underlined the importance of contributing to the reduction of tension and the resumption, as soon as possible, of the political initiative to achieve a structural solution of two peoples and two states,” said Meloni, who was in Israel last weekend.
“I am convinced that working concretely and within defined deadlines for a structural solution to the crisis would be the most effective way to call Hamas’s bluff in the eyes of the Palestinians,” he added.
During his speech, the prime minister expressed solidarity with the victims of the October 7 Hamas terrorist attacks and said that “the civilians of Gaza and the rights of the Palestinian people” are “victims” of the radical group. “No cause can ever justify terrorism or the kidnapping and murder of women and children,” he underlined.
However, Meloni invited Israel to “preserve places of worship in the Gaza Strip, starting with the Christians”: last week an Israeli bombing hit an Orthodox church with more than 1,500 years of history.
Furthermore, he stated that the Italian government’s priority is to guarantee “humanitarian access, essential to avoid further suffering among the civilian population” in Gaza.
“In this sense, the government welcomes the creation by Israel of a humanitarian zone in the Gaza Strip, as well as the decision of the European Commission [poder Executivo da UE] triple humanitarian aid to Gaza, bringing it to over 75 million euros”, he underlined.
