“You always learn something, see something in a different light, because every film talks to every other film. The bigger the difference between them, the better,” he added.

Over the years, I’ve been asked to combine my own films with other people’s older films that served as inspiration. The request came from film festivals, which present these combinations as a program. The terms ‘inspiration’ and ‘influence’ are not entirely accurate. Sometimes the relationship is based on inspiration. Sometimes it’s the relationship between the characters. Sometimes it’s the spirit of the film. Sometimes it’s much more mysterious than that.
