UK and France stress the need to bring aid to Gaza

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and French President Emmanuel Macron have expressed their concerns about sending aid to Gaza and the risks of war between Israel and Hamas, Downing Street said after the leaders spoke by telephone on Sunday.

Israeli forces have expanded their ground operations in Gaza, while fighter jets have struck hundreds of other Hamas targets, in what Israel has called the second phase of a three-week war.

Sunak and Macron have visited Israel and neighboring countries since an attack by Hamas gunmen in Israel earlier this month sparked the conflict.

“The leaders underlined the importance of urgent humanitarian support for Gaza. They agreed to work together on efforts to provide food, fuel, water and medicine to those in need and to evacuate foreign nationals,” a spokesperson for Sunak. “They expressed their concern about the risk of escalation across the region, particularly in the West Bank.”

According to an announcement released by Macron’s office, the leaders also reaffirmed Israel’s right to defend itself within the bounds of international law and spoke of the importance of finding a way to free hostages held by Hamas.

The two leaders said the long-stalled two-state solution, which provides independent states for Israelis and Palestinians, is the best way to create peace.
