Netflix released the poster and subtitled teaser of the new version of “Matilda”, an adaptation of writer Roald Dahl’s children’s classic, which had already been made into a movie by Danny DeVito in 1996 – a champion of the “Afternoon Session”.
For those who do not remember the original story, the protagonist is a young prodigy who begins to attend school, where his eccentric style is antagonized by the cruel director of the institute, Mrs. Trunchbull. When Matilda discovers she has superpowers, she decides to fight the dean’s reign of terror.
But despite the plot is the same, the new film will be completely 90’s version. This is because it is inspired by the musical version of “Matilda”, released in London’s West End in 2011 and on Broadway in 2013, winning seven Olivier Awards and five Tony. Awards. The production includes a lot of singing and dancing, as well as exaggerating situations further.
To give you an idea, the headmistress of the school was played by a man in theaters, so Ralph Fiennes (Voldemort from “Harry Potter”) was even approached for the role.
But it was Emma Thompson who won the spot in the production, in a rare portrayal of a villain after a career full of good-natured children’s characters, such as Nanny McPhee and Professor Trelawney, from the “Harry Potter” franchise. With the help of special effects, she transforms into a giant and powerful antagonist.
The role of Matilda went to 12-year-old Irish Alisha Weir, who excelled in the series “Darklands” (2019), while Lashana Lynch (“Captain Marvel”) was chosen to play the good teacher Ms. Tesoro. Andrea Riseborough (“The Extraordinary Life of Louis Wain”) and Stephen Graham (“Venom: A Time for Carnage”) are also cast as parents of the superpowered girl.
Directed by Matthew Warchus (“Pride and Hope”), “Matilda: The Musical” will premiere “This Holiday Season” in streaming.
