You probably know the serials and movies in which he acted, but his face is not quite familiar to you. For what ? Because in each role she changes her appearance to the point of creating suspicion, sometimes a rebel, cannibal, fragile or femme fatale. Or here, a young girl behind glasses, with her head down.
In The Marguerite Theorem, in theaters this week, the outstanding Ella Rumpf stars as an atypical heroine whose quest will be riveting. A meeting (see our video interview) with a promising young actor is not to be missed.
An actor who likes to hide behind his characters
After being haunted by Julia Ducournau’s tomb on screen, enthralled by Tokyo Vice, or even visiting the world of heritage, Ella Rumpf dazzled Croisette in the shoes of a brilliant math researcher on screen in Marguerite’s Theorem last May. At ENS, who finds his convictions shattered after an error is discovered during his thesis submission. He then decides to leave everything behind to (re)start life.
It was in Cannes that we caught up with the brilliant actor, who was more than happy to talk about this amazing film, with an original theme and a decidedly exciting plot, that we found in theaters today.
I who never loved mathematics!
“A meeting Anna NovionThe director of Marguerite’s Theorem, was immediately very strong and we had very interesting conversations about passion and how you approach work and how seriously you can take it. At first I wasn’t sure about taking on such a role because I never liked maths! This world, which I did not know at all, really opened up to me!”
Knowing how to delicately establish the atmosphere that reigns in great cultures, the confinement and the blindness to the world that arises from it, when work counts at any price, Anna Novion’s film actually sharply paints an atypical heroine. “funny” In the surprising sense of the term, trying to find a place in a world where feelings have no place before the tangibility of figures and the search for ultimate scientific truth.
A heroine that her translator was not particularly fond of “the case” And which he created as a result of a discussion with the director, among other things finding his appearance and “her slippers” as much as “the nuances of his humor,” To lighten the demanding subject of mathematics.
A subject that the audience immediately admires without caring about the subject matter, in spite of himself, embarked on the side of this selfless and clumsy character who traverses the world and interacts with others effortlessly. Uncomfortable in her personal life as well as in her rigid professional life (inhabited by the unforgiving Jean-Pierre Daroussin), Marguerite will see her framed world, made up of well-ordered geometric lines, gradually disappear as feelings and a meeting (with the charismatic Julien Frison) boil everything .
I love to overdo it!
Because reflection on pace and posture is at the heart of her work of embodiment, Ella Rumpf manages to transport us into the world. “without anything” His hero, desire “Bringing Order to Infinity” to silence his initial anxiety.
“I like to play with it, to do a little bit too much, to allow something lost in another world.” “Walk as if on the line, don’t fall, find the right balance, change that character, find your way, a new way by trying things.” This is the most difficult and the most important according to this young chameleon actor who also likes to hide behind his characters to better tell their story.

A chameleon and an eclectic cast, on all fronts
“I don’t want to show off too much, I actually started acting in the film with a shaved head Krieg. Detached from my feminine appearance, I began to relate to my femininity and my profession quite specifically. Finally he tells us. “shy”First of all, he describes himself “naive” In the beginning, I always wanted to make films or act in films, and it started innocently, just looking for casting directors.
“As I grew up, I realized that it was a challenging, non-superficial profession, a research profession that I really appreciated.” The profession, which he likes to explore from all angles and on all fronts, moves without complexes from the provocative auteur cinema of Julia Ducournau to the famous and demanding series that Tokyo Vice Or at least a legacy in which he looked great.
“Seriously, it was a great first film for all of us and one that brought us together, where we crossed a certain line but without thinking about it. Remembering certain scenes comes later! I was and I’m proud to be a part of it. A job that sticks in people’s heads that continues the journey Who left his mark and who we still talk about. I read the script on the train, I couldn’t immediately get into the movie, to understand what direction it was going. I had no experience of this. “Then I immediately lost track of the route the film was taking, because I went back to Switzerland, Germany, and turned left and right.”
From left to right and above all directly, because it was at this moment that he united the diverse world of series: German detective series (Freud), Japanese (Tokyo Vice) or American (Succession).
“I joined this world naturally, without expectations, I am very happy to be a part of it and discover completely different worlds, especially Tokyo Vice And Japan, quite a special experience to enter this world of yakuza from the 90s“.
When asked about his inclinations, he answers without hesitation, he watches more movies than TV series, which take up too much time… which he doesn’t have. “I love going to the theater and watching a movie on the big screen, I’m a caring viewer who loves when movies resonate with you”. Like those that he himself proposes and embodies on a European and slowly international scale.
