Joker 2 is a ‘very risky and surprising film’, according to director of photography

Continuation of Joker (2019) with the addition of Lady Gaga in the cast, Joker: Folie à Deux is scheduled for release in 2024 and is a “very risky and surprising film,” according to a statement from the director of photography LawrenceSher.

During an interview with the magazine Definition Magazine (via @DiscussingFilm), the filmmaker revealed some details about the film starring Joaquin Phoenix and directed by Todd Phillips. “It’s a very risky film that will be surprising to people,” she said. He further explained how Joker and is in the “final stage of post-production.”

Joker 2: Composer confirms that film is a musical

After the critical and box office success of Joker (2019), the Warner Bros. decided to continue this story that was originally supposed to be an independent film. In June 2022, the director Todd Phillipsconfirmed that a sequel was in development, officially revealing the title as Joker: Folie à Deux.

The French subtitle, which translates to “madness for two,” fueled expectations that the Joker’s sidekick, Harley Quinn, would make an appearance in the sequel. And this expectation became reality when it was announced that Lady Gaga would play Dr. Harleen Quinzel.

However, the big surprise came with the revelation that the clown’s second film would be a musical. During a press conference for Halloween Night (2023), the composer Hildur Guðnadóttir, responsible for the film’s soundtrack, left clues about the impact of this musical approach on the film’s music, stating that there would be a lot of music, without giving further details. “All I can say is that there will be a lot of music,” said the composer.

The soundtrack of Guðnadóttir for Joker received much praise from critics and fans, and stood out for the haunting aura of the cello that permeated every track. That acclaim also translated into recognition in the form of an Oscar for Best Original Score.
