It’s a documentary series that revolutionized the genre when it was released in 2015. And for a very specific reason.

That year, HBO aired 6 episodes of The Jinx, an investigation against Robert Durst, directed by Andrew Jarek. A few years earlier, the latter made the movie Love & Secrets (with Ryan Gosling and Kristen Dunst), which was inspired by the true story of this rich real estate developer, who was then suspected of murdering his wife, her best friend. his neighbor.

At the request of Durst himself, the director agreed to make a documentary that would allow him to tell his own truth. What he didn’t know at the time was that he would be giving justice to a central element of the investigation: confessions.

We’re definitely on the last episode. Jarek presents the defendant with evidence of the crime, which he denies, on camera, at the end of the interview, the man goes to the toilet. What he then forgets is that he always carries a microphone with him. While editing the final episode of The Jinx, Jarecki heard Durst say: “I killed them of course”. He was clearly in a hurry to provide evidence to the police.

The murder investigation continued after The Jinx aired. The documentary allowed police to gather new testimony and uncover new clues, leading to a high-profile trial in October 2021. All this will be told in season 2, which HBO just announced by 2024 and covering the last 8 years.

Robert Durst will not see a sequel to The Jinx, as the former businessman passed away in January 2024 at the age of 78.
