The term American refers to the discussion of black skin tone
The term “fair skin” has American origins and means “fair skin” in Portuguese. In the United States it is used frequently and characterizes black people with lighter complexions. In Brazil, the term is highly discussed on social media and can involve controversial issues, such as colorism.
As black representation has increased, the number of people seeking to understand their color and identity has grown. As a result, Internet users have used the term “light skin” to also talk about the skin tones of black Brazilians. It is not known for certain when or who would have “imported” the term.
Do you know what colorism is?
Due to the mixing of descendants of the Brazilian people, blacks with light skin are seen as mixed race. Brown identification is characterized by miscegenation between two distinct races, such as a black person and a white person. It is worth noting that the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) identifies an individual’s color through self-declaration.
The difficulty of self-affirmation for a person of color with light skin, or “light skin”, is often due to constant attacks on one’s color. Judgments can come from people of color with darker skin who say that “those with lighter skin aren’t really black.” And the racial prejudices that people with lighter skin suffer from because they are black.

On the social network “Tik Tok”, content about “light skin” or “light-skinned blacks” has grown. As identification, users use photos of black artists with lighter skin tones, such as actress Zendaya and singer Beyoncé.
It is important to point out that a black person with light skin is still a black person. However, skin tone can help minimize problems that Black people may face in racist environments, which is not the case, for example, for Black people with dark skin.
