From Matilde musical has taken the stage by storm since 2010, it was only a matter of time before the melodious adaptation of Roald Dahl’s play became a film. And with Netflix signing a big deal with Dahl’s ownership, the streaming service is hosting this version of the film. Watch the first preview, starring Emma Thompson, Lashana Lynch and Alisha Weir.
Matilda Wormwood (Weir) is a little girl with great curiosity, a sharp mind and a wild imagination, and the worst family in the world. While her parents (Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough) settle for shoddy television and shady money making schemes, she loves getting lost in the pages of her beloved books. When they are loud, selfish and hateful, she is a silent observer, thinking of small, brazen acts of rebellion and revenge.
After meeting her inspirational teacher, Miss Honey (Lynch), Matilda gets up and begins conjuring up her stories. Excited to go to Crunchem Hall, Matilda is shocked to discover that the school is a dark and oppressive place ruled by the huge and evil Miss Trunchbull (Thompson).
In addition to kind Miss Honey, the bright lights among the nastiness are story-loving librarian Mrs. Phelps (Sindhu Vee) and her new school friends. Filled with an irresistible sense of justice, Matilda dares to stand up for what is right and teach Trunchbull a lesson she will not forget.
With director Matthew Warchus bringing together the creative talent behind the scenes of the series (Denis Kelly adapted the script from his playbook, while composer Tim Minchin provides the songs and music), Matilde It will arrive on Netflix in December.
