“Masterpiece from Netflix”: this 4-episode mini-series moved and angered subscribers

A clear success. In early November, Netflix released 4 episodes of its miniseries All the Light We Cannot See, an adaptation of the novel by Anthony Doerr.

In this thrilling story, played by the promising Aria Mia Lobert, a young blind man tries to survive the Second World War, between the bombing of the city and the search for his father.

Days after its release on the platform, All the Light We Cannot See is at the top of the Netflix charts. Rated 3.8/5 on AlloCiné by the first subscribers who devoured it, the series — which was shot mostly in France and won’t be getting a second season — has received fairly rave reviews.

Viewers especially appreciate the role of the heroine, as well as Louise Hoffman, who we discovered in Dark on Netflix. Work on photography, music (including musical theme moon light) and the Sean Levy-led production are also highlighted in the comments that can be found on the AlloCiné page:

“A Netflix masterpiece! The story and characters are relevant, the photography is great, and the historical context goes a long way in making this mini-series a great little nugget. Worth watching or thinking about!” (Vtob21)

“Pattern of Hope! Definitely one of the best series of 2023. 4 episodes of incredible intensity set against the backdrop of World War II and intended to send a message of hope. The story is rich with emotions and intersecting characters that are really well written, as well as impeccable acting. Nothing more Let’s talk about the beauty of the photography and the high quality of the work done on the light.” (Lia)

“A masterpiece full of humanity at a time when we need it most. Hugh Laurie in a brilliantly unusual role. Two young actors are so exciting. This is a must-see series right now.” (eco deco)

“Absolutely brilliant, poignant series, exceptional images. It combines both the emotions that the characters convey and the duty of memory that the World War II series implies. (Roman Micallef)

“Great series, charming, beautiful reconstruction, too bad there are only 4 episodes. Actor Louis Hoffman appears on screen. (Francois P)

“This adaptation is a true masterpiece. Cinematically finished, with an incredible cast and Aria Mia Laubert in a stunning lead role, this is a must-see series for the end of the year. Between Game of Thrones, In Their Gazes, The Light We Cannot See, and many more, Netflix’s specialty is definitely a mini-series. They are almost always successful.” (ignore)

“This is the first time I’m writing a review because this mini-series turned me on and moved me. The story is really touching and poetic. Brilliant music. I think 1940s France is very successful, both in terms of costumes and characters. For me, this is an undoubted masterpiece! Normally, I’m not a big fan of Netflix series. But then the hats!” (Proven).

Every light we can’t see also has its detractors who point the finger in particular “nonsense” and “gross discrepancies” (Gerard Deltaille).
