What is it about?
Dom and Jas, in their early twenties, have just experienced the bitter taste of their first romantic breakup. Over the course of a busy day in South London, they grow closer, even to the point of helping each other through conflicted relationships with their exes and potentially regaining their faith in love…
Is it worth checking out?
You probably missed this movie (like us) when it came out on Disney+ last March. It must be said that its French translation – Toi et moi? – announced another naive and saccharine romantic comedy. And yet we are far from it.
Rye Lane is now in the news as a favorite at the British Independent Film Awards (Bifa), where it has received 16 nominations, ahead of the highly anticipated Scrapper and Without Ever Knowing Us. Awaiting the results of the ceremony next month, Rayne Allen Miller’s feature film is getting some well-deserved attention.
Rye Lane leads us to the colorful and lively London district of Brixton. The film also borrows its title from the street and market that bring the area to life. In this environment, the two protagonists, played by Sun’s David Johnson Frey and Vivian Opara, wander and where they gradually fall in love. It is impossible not to get attached to these two young people, a little lost, but full of life.
You and me ? is a period romantic comedy with a British charm that makes it original: funny and spicy when it needs to be and touching when it needs to be. Ryan Allen Miller’s production, for which this is the first film, is overloaded with staging ideas (probably to compensate for the small budget). At the end of the day, you’ll walk away from this viewing with a smile and a slightly lighter heart.
With a 98% positive review on Rotten Tomatoes, a 7.2/5 on IMDB, and a more shy 3/5 rating on AlloCinĂ©, Toi et moi? It’s a really small nugget to hold. And the good news… is that it only lasts 1 hour 22 minutes!
