Marvel takes a step back and delivers fun farofa in The Marvels [REVIEW]

Starring Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani, the film is now showing in Brazilian cinemas

Since the debut of Avengers: Endgame (2019), a feature that ended the Infinity Saga, the first major shared arc of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans are in a frantic search for the next show in the franchise. Unfortunately, this is not the case for The Marvelswhich hits Brazilian cinemas this Thursday (9).

In the second film of Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), which now gains reinforcements from Captain Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and his superfan Kamala KhanThe Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani), Marvel throws its ambitions under the rug, takes a step back and, even if it doesn’t bring a show to the cinema, it delivers a fun adventure – the likes of which haven’t been seen in the franchise for a long time – and satisfying enough to keep the Universe Marvel cinematic on track.

In the new, a mysterious phenomenon interconnects the heroine’s powers, forcing them to work together to find out what is happening. Soon, their paths cross with those of Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton, Velvet Buzzsaw – All Art is Dangerous), a Kree revolutionary, who wants revenge on the Captain Marvel for destroying his home planet.

After so many failures in Multiverse Sagaas Thor: Love and Thunder (2022), Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) and, more recently, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023), The Marvels escapes the responsibility of being a great cinematic experience and mixes comedy, action and science fiction in a story without the ambition of becoming a key piece in the franchise’s shared universe, but which does not fail to entertain.

The flagship of the new Marvel film is, certainly, the comedy. The Marvels brings great fight scenes and action sequences well directed by the director Nia DaCosta (The Legend of Candyman), but humor stands out as it appears in 90% of the story, especially in the figure of Iman Vellaniwhich makes your Kamala Khan a bridge between the viewer and this much-loved universe of superheroes.

The actress was born to play the character, who is a fan of the Avengers even before working alongside Earth’s greatest heroes for the first time, and her first meeting with her idol, the Captain Marvel, is as fun as it is relatable. After all, who wouldn’t love to spend time with someone they’ve admired for so long, right?

The chemistry between the protagonists is also highlighted in The Marvels. Despite the short film time – the new film has the shortest duration of a feature film in the franchise to date -, Carol, Kamala It is Monica they build a relationship, which goes beyond bringing together a team of heroines and transforms them into a family, leading to a hasty ending – one of the low points of the production – but exciting.

The Marvelsit outlines few paths for the future of the franchise, but it rescues part of what made hundreds of thousands of fans fall in love and allowed the Marvel Cinematic Universe to go so far: fun.
