Currently in our cinemas, the horror thriller inspired by the famous video game Five Nights at Freddy’s is the first day box office in France.
Released simultaneously in theaters and on Peacock’s streaming platform in the United States on October 27, the Emma Tam feature film grossed $78 million in its first weekend in theaters.
That’s the best start for a horror film in 2023 and the second best start for a video game adaptation behind Super Mario Bros. and its $146.3 million.
Adapted from the games created by Scott Cawthon in 2014, the film is directed by Emma Tammy, produced by Jason Blum and stars Josh Hutcherson (Peeta in The Hunger Games saga), a young Piper Rubio, Elizabeth Lail (Shen) and Matthew Lillard. (Screaming).
Mike takes care of his 10-year-old sister Abby. He is still haunted by the disappearance of his little brother, which happened almost ten years ago. Recently released, he absolutely needs to find a job so he doesn’t lose custody of Abby.
So he takes a job as a night watchman at an abandoned restaurant: Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria. But it doesn’t take long for Mike to realize that looks are terribly deceiving.
With the help of a police officer, Vanessa Shelley, he encounters inexplicable supernatural events at night and falls into a nightmare world…
If the announcement of the only ban on children under 12 years old upset the fans of the games, what did the first viewers really think of this horror film?
At the time of writing, with 8,156 ratings and 141 reviews, FNaF receives an audience rating of 3 out of 5 stars on AlloCiné and a majority of positive reviews.
It’s a good movie, but not scary enough
Internet user Celestin Noir Brion gives it the maximum rating of 5 stars and writes: “Unbelievable, the film found a script that holds up, the music is insane, the shots are beautiful! Maybe a little more horror for the next one!”
Azernl232 in turn gives a score of 4/5 and writes: “Not being a fan of FNAF or horror movies, I don’t really know if the movie lives up to the video game. But overall I found the movie quite good. The “dream” part is quite well done and the soundtrack isn’t bad at all. It’s a very good movie to watch!”
Member Tristan de Kinfe agrees: “Sure, FNAF isn’t scary, but it takes us into a whole new world of horror cinema from start to finish. Fans will find everything they’re looking for in this movie, while newcomers will be well received with a featurette that introduces them to the Freddy gang.“
A big fan of the video game saga, netizen Fikani gives the adaptation a score of 3/5 and regrets that the film is not gritty enough.
“Let’s be honest, the movie is good. We have a not too bad jump, some tension in a large number of scenes and it’s nice to see our favorite robots again. The story is also well written, but not. In line with the games. (…)
The movie doesn’t go far enough. It is not very scary. It really lacks Gore (…). To me, it’s good entertainment for fans and people who don’t know the games, but it’s not a horror movie.“

The opinion is shared by JulietteM, for whom the film gets lost between several genres. “I didn’t know about the games but I like horror movies and I was very disappointed. The film gets lost between several genres, never truly terrifying. . . . We see the players being called, but we don’t hear or care.”
Paul Vineron, for his part, regrets that the film is too far from the game.Very disappointed with the movie. It has nothing to do with the game. No screaming, no scenes with a camera system. And no explanation of the FNaF story. They just took the style and made it into another movie.“
Finally, for Antoine Francis, this is one of the worst horror movies of his life: “The film is a real parody. To be honest, I find this movie extremely bad, full of clichés, the scares are absolutely non existent, the jump scares are very predictable and when they are not, they are laughable.
I honestly think it’s the worst horror movie I’ve ever seen in my life, and it’s on my list of worst movies I’ve ever seen.”
If Jason Bloom and director Emma Tam Convinced that the feature film will only be restricted to children under 12 so that younger players can watch it in cinemas, gamers regret the lack of violent scenes and the omission of certain aspects of the game. But the latter might appear in its possible sequel. The movie Five Nights at Freddy’s…
