Home, that protective home to which we want to return after a day’s work, has a special place in the history of cinema, and especially in the horror genre.

One of the most emblematic is undoubtedly the one nicknamed “The Devil’s House”, a residence located in the suburbs of Amityville in the United States, which gave its name to the famous Stuart Rosenberg horror film released in the late 70s. The film is adapted from Jay Anson’s novel, which was inspired by the dramatic news in which Ronald DeFeo Jr. killed his parents and siblings in their sleep.

After this tragedy, it was very difficult for the house to find new buyers, but finally, a year later, the Lutz family, faced with the low price of this cursed residence, moved there. But a few weeks later, they say, they witnessed paranormal phenomena.

It is their story that is rewritten in this horror film, which subsequently became a franchise with about ten films released over a period of about forty years.

Many other houses have been featured in horror movies. We can obviously think of this disturbing residence, the house of Norman Bates and his mother in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, or even this scene where the six children are trapped by Pennywise in a gloomy old cabin full of traps.

But the house in the cinema is not only in this very specific genre, and some comedies like Maman I Missed the Plane also managed to turn this place into a character, here a real playground for little Kevin, who has decided. Fend off the robbers by using evil to set multiple traps.

And sometimes, we can find homes in certain movie posters, as you’ll be able to see with the ten examples in this quiz!
