Raul’s column: X-ray of motorcycling in Spain!

In this month’s Raul Column we will present a study on the motorcycle market in Spain which reveals important points for authorities and users

The motorcycle market continues to accelerate strongly! The 2023 Motorcycle Mobility Study conducted by the Spanish Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers reveals that 45% of people plan to buy a motorcycle in less than a year.

The reasons? The search for a more current motorbike with more modern technology (23%), a new model (18%) and a more powerful one (18%) are, in order, the three main reasons.

Important data in Raul’s Column

According to this annual report, in 2023, 67% of those who ride a large-displacement motorbike will opt for a road motorbike, 20% for a scooter and 13% for an off-road motorbike. The average annual distance traveled by motorcyclists in 2023 is 6,071 kilometers, slightly higher than last year’s 5,960 kilometers.

Seven out of ten motorcyclists travel between two and ten thousand kilometers per year and only two out of ten (18%) travel more than ten thousand kilometers per year. In fact, the duration of the most common journey is between 20 and 40 minutes (35% of motorcyclists), while those who use the motorbike for very short journeys, less than 20 minutes, represent 21%.

29% confess, however, that they use the motorbike for trips lasting more than an hour. Four in ten motorcyclists make trips of less than 30 kilometres, compared to three in ten who travel more than 30 kilometers per day.

The use of the motorbike is another of the most interesting aspects of the survey, given that 44% use it daily, while occasional use drops to 28% (it was 32% in 2021). In turn, the practice of motorbike touring will grow by five points in 2023: from 60% last year to 65% this year.

Riding safety is a major concern for motorcyclists. The presence of other vehicles on the road and poor asphalt maintenance are the main highlights of the respondents with a total of 48% and 37% respectively.

The motorcycle has grown in concept compared to last year’s survey, you see: it is considered safer by 52% of motorcyclists (it was 48% in 2022), fast (99%) and comfortable (93%).

One of the most important questions in times of rising petrol prices was the perception of the economics of motorbikes, as stated by 62% of those interviewed (16% more than in 2022). Another interesting note is that 87% of respondents approve the use of the fast lane to increase safety.

On the other hand, it is interesting to highlight the growing knowledge of the interviewees regarding environmental restrictions. If last year 74% of motorcyclists declared they were aware of these restrictions, this year the percentage rose by three points to 77%.

However, almost nine out of ten (86%) are convinced that cars pollute more than motorbikes. And finally, a note: motorcyclists in Spain continue to have a negative perception compared to other means of transport: 63% believe that motorcycles are discriminated against compared to other vehicles!
