Released in 2009 and consisting of 64 episodes, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is an adaptation of the Fullmetal Alchemist manga by Hiromu Arakawa (27 volumes available from Kurokawa). This is the second animated adaptation of the work, following the first Fullmetal Alchemist series produced in 2003.

Although appreciated by fans, this first anime was superseded by a new series due to taking many liberties with the manga’s plot. The series, which ran alongside the manga, failed to live up to the original story and is now considered a non-canonical work of the Fullmetal Alchemist universe.

Barely a few years after this first series aired, a second adaptation called Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood was released. The word “brotherhood” refers to the show’s two protagonists, Edward and Alphonse Elrich, two alchemist brothers who seek the Philosopher’s Stone to restore their mutilated bodies after a failed attempt to revive their mother.

Fullmetal Alchemist explores a steampunk world ravaged by bloody war throughout its story. Although the work gains depth and maturity as its story develops, the series ends with an emotional finale that broke the hearts of many fans.
