Brazilian director Fernando Meirelles will direct a new Netflix project. The film is a partnership with production company O2 Filmes and will portray thetragedy of Brumadinho, Minas Gerais. There is not yet an expected date for the start of the works.
The Brumadinho tragedy occurred on January 25, 2019 and is considered the most devastating environmental and humanitarian disaster in Brazil’s history. On that occasion, the dam of the Córrego do Feijão mine, managed by Vale, broke.
Approximately 12 million cubic meters of iron ore waste were released. A real mud avalanche destroyed the structures, communities, farms and environmental areas of Vale for several kilometers in the Brumadinho region, in Minas Gerais.
According to authorities, 272 deaths have been confirmed. The search for the missing lasted four years. Thousands of families were directly affected by the tragedy and to date the issue of compensation has not been resolved.
In addition to the deaths, the collapse of the dam caused a gigantic environmental impact, with the destruction of local fauna and flora and the contamination of the region’s rivers.
