What is it about?
A new adaptation of The Four Daughters of Dr. Marsh, inspired by both the great literary classic and the writings of Louisa May Alcott. A personal re-reading of the book, Dr. March’s Daughters is a film that is both timely and relevant in which Jo March, the author’s fictional alter ego, reflects on her life.
Dr. Marsh’s Daughters, a film written and directed by Greta Gerwig, with Zairos Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Timothée Chalamet…
Dream casting
Four years before the Barbie wave, actress, screenwriter and director Greta Gerwig signed on to adapt the Louisa May Alcott classic. Doctor’s Four Daughters MarchDr. Marty’s Daughters was translated into French.
According to Greta Gerwig, the story of the March sisters — four young women determined to live their own lives — is timeless and timeless.
And to highlight it, he chose an exceptional cast. On screen, we see his admiration for the actors and his love for the characters. Especially for Joe March, played by Saoirse Ronan.
She’s a bit of a quirky young woman, doesn’t want to follow the rules or fit into a mold. At least in the 19th century. She wants to do what she loves in life, be independent without being that housewife who just married a rich man. First of all, he wants to be remembered.
Saoirse Ronan portrays this iconoclastic personality with all her conviction and talent, as if she were playing her own life.
Florence Pugh Amy
But he’s not the only one who delivers a stunning performance. Florence Pugh, as Amy, is already proving her status as a star. His character is probably the most developed in the film.
When young, Amy is immature, almost idiotic at times, which leads to some of the funniest moments in the film. Sometimes even funny. As an adult, he seems more calm, purposeful and responsible. Unlike her sister, she intends to follow one of the rules that society imposes on women of her status: to marry a rich man.
Emma Watson stars as Maggie, the older sister who everyone admires. It looks great. So her character arc goes through several demonstrations of how her imperfections make her a role model for her sisters.
Timothée Chalamet is also part of the cast, playing the Marty family’s close neighbor Lori. And surrounding all these beautiful little people are two very talented actresses: Laura Dern (Marmie March, Mother) and Meryl Streep (Aunt March), both perfect as always.
No character is left to chance. They are all handled with a level of detail and complexity that is quite rare for a film that lasts “only” two and a quarter hours. With so many characters in a film, it’s very common to focus on just a few.
And yet, Greta Gerwig gives space to each of them by contrasting the contrasting tones of each period – the narrative works on the past-present principle – and makes them coherent.
Upon its release, Daughters of Doctor March grossed $108 million in the United States and Canada and ended up grossing nearly $219 million worldwide. A remarkable performance for a small independent film with a budget of $40 million, especially against the likes of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and Jumanji: Next Level.
This success, of course, was helped by the decision of Mattel Films to entrust the production of Barbie to the one who turns everything into gold.
Daughters of Doctor March is available until November 23rd on Netflix. And its actors will give you 5 good reasons to see the movie:
