Messi analyzes Argentina’s defeat and plans a classic with Brazil: ‘We will always respect them’

One of the few who saved Argentina’s 2-0 defeat against Uruguay at the Bombonera, Messi preached respect to his opponent and considered the result fair. The Argentine captain praised the work of coach Marcelo Bielsa at the helm of Celeste and explained the difficulties encountered by the team on the pitch.

– We weren’t able to accelerate, to give our rhythm to the match, and we missed this. We don’t feel comfortable. Bielsa’s hand can be seen in the opposing team. Uruguay brought a very physical team, which plays the ball well and is very fast. They managed to take a lot of danger and ended up scoring goals that way. We lost against an opponent who plays very well. Now it’s time to get up and try to play a great match in Brazil – said Messi, who added him.

– These types of qualifying matches, against Uruguay, are always like this. They are intense. The young people arriving now must learn not to give up on this team (Uruguay). They have to learn to respect it, because this classic has always been very tense and complicated. So they still need to learn a little.

Next Tuesday (21st), Argentina will face Brazil, at 9.30pm (Brasilia time), at the MaracanĂ£. Messi underlined the difficulty of the match, despite his rival’s poor form.

– With Brazil it’s a different game, which has a lot of history. We have to get back up after the defeat, but obviously we will always respect them, because playing against them is not easy.

Argentina leads the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, with 12 points. Brazil is in 5th place with 7 points and has not won for three rounds.
