After Family Matters’ Jo Marie Payton revealed shooting issues with Jaleel White, co-star Reginald VelJohnson stepped in.

Being one of the most popular sitcoms of the 90s, the staple of the TGIF Family matters He has long been more associated with Steve Urkel than Jaleel White, the up-and-coming character who transformed the series from a heartfelt family comedy into something far more bizarre and more about younger characters. And while White has occasionally pondered over the years on how playing Urkel was somewhat of a blessing and a curse to others, fans are only now getting more candid views on how things have been going since then. Family matters‘adult stars. A little over a month later Jo Marie Payton called White for a case where he threatened to physically fight her, even the portrayal of sitcom patriarch Reginald VelJohnson offered not-so-positive thoughts.

After playing the often-criticized cop Carl Winslow for all nine seasons, Reginald VelJohnson had been around since the quieter early days of Family matters‘recalls the days of the end of the game, when all the young actors were basically full-fledged adults. Like others, VelJohnson saw Jaleel White become a superstar, something that apparently went to the young man’s head and made him a little more difficult to deal with on a weekly basis. Here’s like him die Hard the vet explained to him entertainment tonight making sure to expand his thoughts after directing them to White first:

He was a wonderful boy [but] I think working with him was a challenge. Working with everyone was a challenge, and there were times when it was a bit difficult. But overall I have only good memories of him.

This is certainly as balanced an answer as one might hope, because Reginald VelJohnson is arguably more aware now than ten years ago that saying something too damning about Jaleel White would have spread across the Internet like wildfire. Which is not to say he was hiding something, of course, because it actually might sound like a “challenge” and nothing more complicated than that. To that end, I can’t imagine White trying to physically argue with his fictional neighbor, so VelJohnson probably doesn’t share it with former co-star Jo Marie Payton.

And yet, while he didn’t share memories of passionate and unstable emotions, Reginald VelJohnson talked about how boring and annoying it can be trying to do things behind the scenes on set when there were so many of them. . . Many child and teen actors run around. And I think almost all parents, teachers, counselors, etc. you will immediately understand where it came from when he said:

I think a lot of kids grew up on set and we had to take care of the kids … and it was an interesting experience, dealing with the kids as they got older. I went into my dressing room and locked the door when [rehearsed] my scenes because it was the only way. Because children have a lot of energy … [and] you couldn’t take care of it. I remember an accident, that’s it [and] the kids were playing basketball on the set and I couldn’t stand it. I said, ‘Please, please, stop playing basketball!’ And they wouldn’t stop. I told him, ‘Look, either stop playing basketball or I’m leaving.’ And I left, but after that there was no more basketball.

For what it’s worth, Jaleel White has also explained over the years how he didn’t feel welcome on set when he stepped aboard . Steve Urkel was supposed to be a one-time guest and ended up being the whole show thanks to ridiculously popular slogans like “Did I?” But it doesn’t appear that Payton or VelJohnson had any hostility on this subject, beyond the idea that the instant hit to fame gave White the freedom to do whatever he wanted on set, without repercussions. One can only imagine what would have happened to the show if Urkel had gone missing instead the late Judy Winslow .

Fans have been asking for some kind of Family matters long-standing rebirth, among other returns from the TGIF but beyond some speaks at least of a lively comeback , apparently things have not progressed on any of these fronts. However, while you wait more, all nine seasons can be streamed with a HBO subscription Max . and take a look What Family matters the cast was up to par in recent years, which may or may not include a marijuana strain in the style of Steve Urkel .
