Milei, from Argentina, received a mixed reception during his appearance at the opera

Argentine presidential candidate Javier Milei stole the show Friday night when his presence at Argentina’s most prestigious opera house sparked a heated exchange shortly before polarized elections that end Sunday.

Milei, a radical libertarian whose social conservatism and promises to cut government spending have inspired both contempt and admiration, attended a performance of Madame Butterfly with his girlfriend at the elaborate Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires.

It didn’t take long for opponents to protest and supporters to applaud in his defense, as the theater’s famous acoustics amplified the boos and fiery applause.

On Sunday, Argentines will choose between right-wing candidate Milei and the current center-left Economy Minister, Sergio Massa, in a fierce contest that has stoked political tensions amid the country’s worst economic crisis in more than two decades.

“You are the dictatorship,” some onlookers shouted, calling Milei “trash.”

Critics accuse Milei of downplaying atrocities committed during the country’s brutal dictatorship from 1976 to 1983. Milei’s running mate has defended military officers convicted of crimes against humanity.

The insults prompted cheers in Milei’s defense, with videos of the incident spreading on social media.

The theater’s director, Jorge Telerman, wrote on X, formerly Twitter, that he condemned the “expressions of intolerance” directed at Milei.

The presidential candidate joked about the confusion in the X theater. “What a beautiful job Madame Butterfly,” he wrote.
