Matthew Perry in a superhero costume? The actor obviously really wanted it! Chandler’s unforgettable character on Friends, who died on October 28 at the age of 54 and who was recently celebrated by his friends on the show with a moving tribute, was very serious indeed about taking part in the superhero adventure.
Matthew Perry was a huge Batman fan, so much so that he built a Batcave in his home to store all of his Batman-related memorabilia, which he named the latest chapter of his memoir The Dark Knight. Then it’s not surprising that the movie he wanted to be a (super) hero, he named… Mathman!
The Hollywood Reporter website Matthew Perry has reportedly pitched his superhero project to director Adam McKay to produce. The proposal dates back to November 2020, when the actor was filming the director’s Don’t Look Up: Cosmic Denial (a film from which he would eventually be cut during editing).
Matthew Perry, whose recent Instagram post seen below mentioned this famous Mattman character (more for Matthew, the man for the superhero mention, but you got it right), brought his film to McKay. A square in which we can observe a clear autobiographical element.

“It’s this guy’s story that you’ll quickly recognize.”Perry summed up McKay. “His name is Matt, he’s very famous, he’s 50 years old. His life is a bit of a mess. He’s lost. Suddenly, a distant relative dies and leaves him $2 billion. Then he decides to give it away. Use it to become a superhero.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Adam McKay liked the idea of Matthew Perry because he saw it as a reflection of the actor’s soul and journey. “Every idea in the film is a little bit like someone telling you their dream. And there’s obviously a meaning behind it.”the director noted.
In the end, the two men did not make Mattman’s project a reality. The reason, as noted by The Hollywood Reporter: McKay wanted to pull back on the superhero side, preferring to focus the film more on the famous actor’s character facing addiction.
Matthew Perry, not interested in this change of direction, turned down McKay’s offer and ultimately never brought the character of Mattman to the screen. But a few days before his disappearance, he still mentions it…
