Since November 16, all eyes have been on Netflix and its historical series The Crown. Season 6 follows the last months of Diana Spencer’s life before she dies along with her partner in a horrific car accident in August 1997.
The first part published online on the platform, which has only 4 short episodes, recalls the 8 weeks that preceded the drama and her summer romance with Dodi Al Fayed. From meeting in the South of France to eloping in Monte Carlo through their stay in Paris, The Crown didn’t miss a single milestone that marked their summer. And in particular, the engagement ring.
The Seal of Discord
If The Crown writers are taking some liberties with this Season 6, there is still a grain of truth. As for this ring, it really did exist. According to this Washington Post article Dated 1997, questioning Alberto Repos, the jeweler who created the ring, Dodi Al Fayed bought the piece with the intention of offering it to a loved one.
The couple fell in love with the 115,000-franc ring during their (quick) visit to the Repossi boutique in Monaco about ten days before the accident. This was then transferred to the Paris franchise located opposite the Ritz.
Surveillance camera images captured Dodd walking into the store. The ring was found in the latter’s apartment and given to his grieving father… before Repos demanded it and demanded payment.
To engage or not to engage?
This is a question that still does not have a definitive answer. The Netflix series imagines what happened behind the walls of the Ritz by staging a marriage proposal…in fact, we have no proof that it actually happened. That’s right, the ring the couple chose was from Repossi’s bridal collection and it was called “Say Yes”.
It was Mohammed Al Fayed, the dead man’s father, repeating it to anyone who would listen Diana was planning to marry her son, that she was pregnant from him and was killed for this reason. According to him, the royal family would not accept that the former princess married an oriental man. But if Diana’s friends and family are to be believed, the latter had absolutely no intention of marrying Dodd, whom she met just weeks before…
