‘They were screaming and leaving the theater’: Audiences went wild for one of the best sci-fi films of all time

Two years after Star Wars, science fiction is back in fashion in Hollywood, and Ridley Scott has just agreed to direct the feature film Alien, the Eighth Passenger, a terrifying space film in which “No one can hear you screamAnd there was crying, especially during one of the previews of the movie.

Why Alien is the movie to get Ridley Scott’s filmography off to a good start

in a documentary film The Beast Within: The Making of AlienEditor Terry Rawlings says one of the film’s first screenings was particularly tense:

We went to this movie theater run by guys… you can eat off the floor. The cinema was fantastic. The sound was insane. It was the most incredible preview I have ever seen. Imagine: people were screaming and running from the cinema!

It’s a really intense feeling, but it has to be said that in 1979 the movie Alien went a long way, as evidenced by the moment when the baby xenomorph is born in the womb of poor John Hart, which clearly caused a stir among the first viewers. About the film, as Rowling recalls:

“We heard the management saying: “It’s terrible! People are vomiting everywhere and it’s very stressful.” And we said to ourselves, “That’s great.”

Stanley Kubrick is amazed!

This scene of the arrival of the beast is the most striking in the film, so much so that after the release of Alien, Ridley Scott was called by a prestigious colleague: Stanley Kubrick, who asked him how it was filmed, because he did. Didn’t see the edit cut. So Scott explained it to him very kindly.

The series was filmed with several cameras, because the effect only worked once. Scott explains Los Angeles Times : “When the tray got covered in blood, we couldn’t clean it”. John Hurt knelt down and just let himself through the hole made in the edge of the table and placed the fake torso on the table.

“I saw a little creature out of sight of the actors. There were no digital effects at the time, so the creature actually came out of that torso.” The effect of terror is guaranteed then as it is today!
