Forty years after frightening a whole generation of young viewers, they are back: the Gremlins are back with an animated series called The Mysteries of Mogua, which is set as a prequel to two films set in the 1920s in China, starring the protagonist. Sam, the future Mr. Wing of the Gremlin!
The creators of the program, Tze Chun and Brendan Hay, were in Annecy on Thursday, June 16, to accompany the world exclusive broadcast of the very first episode of the series. But the main attraction of this panel was obviously the presence of Joe Dante, the legendary director of two films of the Gremlin, who is considered the consulting producer of the program.
The filmmaker himself offered his services to the HBO Max platform. The latter, whose latest film “Burying the Ex” dates back to 2014, trusted without any bitterness. “Envy those who have a job”A sign of some resentment towards an industry that no longer counts on him, despite the huge success of his previous films.
Asked exactly about the origins of the Gremlin success, Joe Dante paid homage to someone without whom Gizmo would not have been a beloved mogul who was adored by all, but a terrible Gremlin: Steven Spielberg (producer of two films). It was the latter who demanded the rewriting of an overly obscure script so that Gizmo would not turn into an evil monster and become the companion of a Billy movie hero.
Emphasizing the irony of returning the Gremlins to the world through the prequel animated series and not the third part that fans have been asking for for many years, Joe Dante reveals that he filmed the Gremlins 2 as a film whose theme is not immediately available. Moreover, it would have been completely impossible for him to fund a film of this scale today, other than digital special effects, which he categorically refuses to do, as nothing goes beyond a puppet mogul other than the CGI Gremlin.
Words that clearly do not refer to the series Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, the first episode of which recalls Gizmo (whose origins can be traced back to his village of Mogwai) and Sam Wing’s first meeting in Shanghai in the 1920s. First of all, the series, created as a family program, promises to make it darker in the episodes so that the Gremlins (not in this episode) make their horrible aspect of the movies.
In this wonderful animated series (already updated with additional seasons) it is expected to introduce a fourth rule, which is obviously kept a secret by the creators of the program. Remember the first three: Do not place the sun’s rays in the sun, do not get wet, and above all, do not eat after midnight!
The animated series Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, launched on the HBO Max platform in the United States at the end of the year, will be offered exclusively on the Cartoon Network channel in France.
