After eight years of good and faithful service, Fear the Walking Dead bowed out this Sunday, November 19 with the airing of its final episode. A year after the end of the original series, fans of the franchise were able to discover the result of this spin-off – the first to see the light of day.
While the ending of The Walking Dead didn’t really impress, Fear the Walking Dead didn’t inspire much enthusiasm. Once appreciated by a portion of the public as better than the parent series, the spin-off’s final seasons have been aired with near-universal indifference, and this final episode was no exception.
If there’s one observation we can make at first glance, it’s that the ending of Fear the Walking Dead is like The Walking Dead: flat and anecdotal. Even with the group of survivors splitting up, the path taken by the show’s characters still leaves the door open for possible new spin-offs.
mother’s pain
Madison played the role of Kim Dickens from the first episode of the series. Among the rare survivors to appear in the finale, it should be remembered that the latter was absent for three seasons (he returned in season 7) after his supposed death. The roles are now reversed as now the disappearance of her daughter Alicia confronts the heroine.
Blinded by the hope of finding her daughter alive, Madison embarks on a vengeful and relentless search. Even if it means holding Tracy hostage, Troy’s daughter, whom he brutally kills after the latter reveals that the little girl is Alicia’s child and therefore his granddaughter.
Perfectly trained in survival principles, Tracy manages to grab Madison’s gun and shoot her at point blank range. A medal that belonged to Alicia will stop the bullet; This moment makes Madison realize the evil he was about to commit, which explains why he tries to sacrifice his own life to save his comrades.
Too bad Madison doesn’t succumb to the explosion she caused. Rescued from the wreckage at the last minute by Tracy, she is joined by Alicia – a moving mother-daughter reunion. This sequence also lets us know that Tracy is not Alicia’s daughter, but that doesn’t matter because now the three characters are united in a seamless bond.
“Our series begins with Madison, the matriarch of a blended family in Los Angeles. So our ideal ending is this: Madison at the head of a new blended family, now consisting of her daughter Alicia and her granddaughter. Daughter-in-law, Tracy.” made a comment Entertainment Weekly Series co-showrunner Andrew Chambliss.
Back to the sanctuary
This last episode is marked by Morgan’s absence. After leaving the final season to join Rick Grimes in Alexandria, the character played by Lennie James ended up not appearing in any The Walking Dead series. Perhaps he’s set to return in the mini-series The Ones Who Live, the start date of which has just been announced?
Also among the franchise’s most iconic characters, Dwight survives in this final episode. After a long battle in which he almost lost the weapon on his left, here he is ready to start a new path in the Sanctuary, returning to Negan’s old landmark.
Here again, it would be surprising that such a character was offered such an uninteresting ending. Who knows if Dwight won’t appear in Season 2 of Dead City, a spin-off centered around Maggie and Negan, which sees the latter facing off against Croat, one of his former lieutenants? All fans will agree that as it is, Dwight deserved a better ending than what is currently being offered in any case.

Victor, or the way of the hero
Finally, how can we not mention Victor, a character who has also been around since the first season of Fear the Walking Dead. Although his interpreter Colman Domingo does not close the door to a return in the spin-off (provided that the role “Challenge”with the help of Deadline), the series finale leaves him as the main character after Madison’s disappearance.
The series also offers a happy ending for Daniel Salazar. Of course, the finale doesn’t bring his wife and daughter back to life — but the episode still ends on an upbeat note by reuniting him with his cat, Skidmark. It should be noted that the Walking Dead franchise rarely gives us moments of such sweetness…
The future of the license is already known. Dead City and Daryl Dixon (currently airing on Paramount+) has been renewed for Season 2, and miniseries The Ones Who Live with Rick Grimes and Michonne will air on February 25th on AMC. Waiting for other products to appear…
