Italian parties unanimously support the repression of violence against women

Italian parliamentarians unanimously supported a series of measures to crack down on violence against women on Wednesday, after the murder of a university student and the arrest of her ex-boyfriend sparked a national debate on the issue.

The Senate approved the bill proposed by the right-wing government of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni with 157 votes in favor and 0, in a rare demonstration of unity between the parties in power and the opposition.

The Chamber of Deputies had already given the first green light unanimously at the end of last month.

The new law expands the protection of women at risk, to prevent even more serious episodes of violence and stop a wave of feminicides that has sparked outrage across the country.

“This law introduces measures that in many cases can make the difference between life and death,” said Italian Family Minister Eugenia Roccella.

The murder that occurred in recent days of Giulia Cecchettin, a 22-year-old student from a town near Venice, particularly shocked the country due to the age of the victim, who was about to graduate this month. Her ex-boyfriend, Filippo Turetta, was arrested as a suspect.

Turetta is detained in Germany, where he was found by police on Saturday in a broken-down car. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on Wednesday that his extradition had already been agreed.
