Emerald Fennell stated that the scene is important to the development of the story
Emerald Fennell (Beautiful Revenge) defended the frontal nudity scenes of Barry Keoghan (The Banshees of Inisherin) in his new film, Saltburn. According to the filmmaker, the sequences were not used lightly and serve to develop the story.
“When it comes to nudity, I’m very careful, I think. It’s very important to me that the scene doesn’t sound gratuitous, that it’s always coherent.”he explained in an interview with the magazine People. The specific scene shows Keoghan dancing naked on a dance floor, and for her to be in the film, it needed to have meaning, according to Fennell.
“Whether it’s when people are having breakfast or when everyone is dancing naked, why is that in the film? What is this scene telling us? What answer does that give us?”he questioned. “There are moments in the film where the joy and the horror and the wonder is knowing that you are going to an inexplicable place. That’s what Barry is interested in.”added the filmmaker about the moment.
Written and directed by Fennell, Saltburn it presents Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan), a university student in England, in the 2000s, who ends up developing an obsessive passion for the aristocrat Felix Cattonlived by JacobElordi (Euphoria).
