Marvel: The original ending to the Loki series has been changed, and that’s a good thing

Warning, spoilers. It is recommended to watch season 2 of Loki before continuing reading this article.

After 14 years, Tom Hiddleston bids farewell to his character and Marvel with the explosive finale of Loki Season 2, available on Disney+. The God of Evil finally fulfilled his “glorious destiny” and saved the multiverse.

The story arc of the character played by Tom Hiddleston came to an epic conclusion. Loki managed to secure the TVA (Tribunal of Anachronic Variations), which governs inconsistencies in the multiverse and gaps in the eternal time stream.

Loki made the ultimate sacrifice by taking the place of “He Who Lives” in the TVA and becoming the guardian of all time except the eternal time stream. He took all the temporary branches and assembled them into the “Tree of Life” which will contain his new divine throne in the Citadel at the end of time.

His sacrifice then allows the TVA to return as 2.0, with a new manual, new guidelines, and more effective protection of the multiverse. Loki destroyed the temporal center that somehow kept the balance in the timeline and took its place.

He is now more alone than ever on his throne, but has finally fulfilled his glorious destiny to become the guardian of the Timelines.

Loki’s ending should have been different

But this ending could have been different, except for one important detail. Indeed, the Marvel series team made a significant change to the finale during production.

It is in the special documentary “Marvel Studios Assembled: The Making of Loki Season 2” available on Disney+ that Aaron Moorhead, who co-directed the second half of the season with Justin Benson, explained this modification.

Originally, Loki had to preserve the timeline and the time center and not destroy it or take its place. The filmmakers chose to change this ending so that Loki sacrificed himself and his ending was more heroic:

“There was a draft of the script until the end and something was missing. The problem was that Loki didn’t destroy the time delay center in that first script. He saved it from the explosion and took the throne.

He lacked that sense of self-sacrifice, and we realized that he had to destroy it and take on this huge responsibility. Now it seems clear that it was the right choice. But it was a turning point in its development when we realized that Loki had to be destroyed and become a temporary center.

Therefore, this ending allows Loki to achieve his glorious destiny and complete his narrative arc in a more heroic and epic way. Enough to give Tom Hiddleston a chance to say goodbye to the character he played for so many years.

Both seasons of Loki are available on Disney+.
