Coach Marcelo Fernandes explained Santos’ motivations in seeking an equalizer against Botafogo in the final minutes. The teams drew 1-1 this Sunday (26th), at the Nilton Santos stadium, in the 35th matchday of the Brazilian championship.
According to the commander of Alvinegro Praiano, the stimulus came from the meeting between the teams in the first round, when the Sao Paulo team opened two goals in the first half and conceded the equaliser. The goal, therefore, was to react.
“Everything is used. When we were bad, do you think Bahia didn’t use it in the match against us, in Salvador? The fact that in the first leg we scored 2 nil against Botafogo was also used, I wasn’t even in the club. Thanks to bad luck and the great team that Botafogo has, they managed to equalize in the second half. We had to try and make a substitution. Today the opposite happened,” Fernandes said.
Regarding the fact that midfielder Nonato left the pitch crying at the end of the match, Marcelo Fernandes explained that the athlete was shaken after Carioca’s first goal and that there was a sense of guilt for the set piece. Danilo Barbosa completed a cross to open the scoring with a header.
“We tried to calm him down. He felt guilty about the Botafogo goal. There is no one to blame here. We spoke to him. He is giving a lot for the club, everyone knows the delicate moment. Nobody wants to fail. Nonato is very effective,” he said .
Santos returns to the field on Wednesday (29th), when they host Fluminense in Vila Belmiro, for the 36th round of the Brazilian championship.
